The Uros people, of Lake Titicaca, embody a strange and fragile continuityβa culture suspended between worlds, both past and present. One of the most iconic elements of their culture is their beautifully crafted reed boats, known as balsas. These boats, which once served as tools for survival, are now more like talismansβsymbols of power, protection, and a tie to the natural world. Each boat can take weeks to build and is a labour of love passed down through generations.
Firstly, the reeds growing several feet below the waterβs surface are harvested with a knife attached to a long pole. Then the bundles, called amaros, must be carefully dried in the sun for up to a month before they are ready to be used. While once vital for daily life, balsas are now primarily used for ceremonial purposes or to offer tourists a glimpse into Uros tradition. Read more on our Journal.
